Strategies for Business/People
In 2006 I decided to retire* when I left Standard Chartered Bank. I had spent the previous four years managing a very challenging but rewarding period for the UK and Hong Kong listed bank which started it’s life in South Africa as 20twenty.
Being in the middle passage of my life (35 - 50), and having been modestly successful in my business endeavours, I decided that the time was right to focus on work that I found fulfilling and meaningful.
This has taken the form of Facilitating Scenario Planning and Strategy Sessions, Executive Coaching and Lecturing Strategy as well as taking an interest in a few select businesses.
I've been very fortunate to work with fascinating Executives and Executive Teams from around the world over the past years which has afforded me the opportunity to complement my own experience of playing these roles.
I subscribe to Charles Handy's description of a portfolio life. I feel blessed to enjoy a rich, very rewarding and special life which I share with my wife Dee, my two daughters Amy and Nina, my broader family and friends scattered around the planet.
In addition to the work I do on my own I am very fortunate to have Business Partners, Friends and Colleagues in my various business interests who complement what I have to offer. You can explore who and what I do on connecteddale.com.
Springboard
to a portfolio life
Working to bring out the best, I invest in people and businesses where we both stand to gain. My investment comes in the form of time, expertise or money. I expect to make a return either financially, in the form of new learning and experience, or simply to be able to do something meaningful.

Welcome to the Springboard to my Portfolio Life. This is the landing page that I use to keep track of my business and personal interests and provide insight to potential clients looking for information about me, my work and my thinking.
I focus on activities that bring together People, Strategy and Brand.
Specifically I offer:
My current thinking is predominantly influenced by:
•Positive Psychology (a catch all for believing that we are healthy functioning human beings who are unique and are at our best when working with our talents. This is in contrast to attempting to ‘fix’ problems in our lives);
•Scenario Planning (The Mont Fleur Scenarios which influenced both South Africa and me significantly);
•the Creativity writings of Robert Fritz and Ken Robinson; and
•Marty Neumeier’s writing on Brands and Designful Companies
•Learning Styles from David Kolb which is the simplest and best way to understand how experiential learning works.
_________
*retirement (noun) the action or fact of leaving one's job and ceasing to work typically upon reaching the normal age for leaving employment.
Waiting until some day around my 60th birthday to start really enjoying life while in the meantime working in areas which aren’t my passion just doesn’t make sense to me. Likewise saving my money so that I don’t need to generate any cash after 60 also seems limited. I’d rather create a life for myself now that contains all the elements that I want to do both now and in the future and make money doing it all along. The nature of what I do for work will certainly change, and the intensity will vary over time, but I will always have business interests whether purely investment, or active pursuits.
